t was such a thrill: waiting for the one-hour photo lab to process the film from your camera. Richard Simpkin remembers the rush after amassing 2000 photos of himself with celebrities over 25 years.

For the benefit of Generations Y and Z, the lab or booth at the chemist was before the digital age made everything "generation now" and a hashtag on Instagram.

"An hour felt like an eternity," Mr Simpkin said. "You couldn't look on the back of your camera to see if the photo worked."

The 41-year-old Sydney photographer and author is exhibiting 455 images in the Richard & Famous exhibition at the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery and in doing so, providing an insight into the celebrity chase. From waiting hours for stars, to tracking down tour managers via their name in a concert program.

Photos and the "selfie" have replaced the autograph book in documenting encounters with actors, rock stars, public figures and reality TV poseurs who changed the fame game.

As a skinny 15-year-old, Mr Simpkin was inspired to reach for the camera when a friend showed him a photo of her father with John Lennon in New York. Rather than seeking autographs, he wanted a photographic record of people who would be remembered in history and knew that one day, he would have an exhibition.

'"In 100 years' time we will still be talking about Nelson Mandela. We won't be talking about Kim Kardashian."

It is more a question of: who hasn't Mr Simpkin been snapped with? His collection includes Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Sir Donald Bradman, the Dalai Lama, Audrey Hepburn, Oprah and Elle Macpherson.

After meeting Michael Hutchence in 1989, they remained friends and two days before the rock star's death in 1997, his father, Kell, said: "Let me take a picture of you two." The photo of the duo embracing is in the exhibition.

You know the "selfie" is a phenomenon when the Centre for Contemporary Photography in Fitzroy hosted the lecture "How the 'selfie' performs across time and place".

Turning the camera on oneself reached its zenith when US talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres took her Oscars group photo, and when Australian hockey player Jayde Taylor captured a smiling Queen at the Commonwealth Games.

While Mr Simpkin is captivated by his brushes with fame, he doesn't display photos at home and for this photo, he compiled a photo wall. Nor does he keep up with celebrity news, websites or magazines.

He stopped taking photos last year but "came out of retirement" last month when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were in Sydney for the red-carpet premiere of Unbroken. A friend waited 10 hours up the front with the ultimate act of kindness: holding him a spot.

Mr Simpkin did something different by asking the actors to take a selfie with him.

"Some people say its populist, but for him to do this, you have to be highly professional, highly trained.
